Natl. Restaurant Assoc. takes new lobbying approach w/health care reform

Under the leadership of CEO Dawn Sweeney, the National Restaurant Association has broken with tradition in the lobbying arena during the recent congressional fight over health care reform. In 2004, 90 percent of the group’s lobbying money went to Republican lawmakers; today that number is only 60 percent, with 40 percent going to Democrats. The shift is explained as the group’s way of helping shape reform it can support, rather than categorically opposing reform. For example, Sweeney has participated in negotiations that produced three industry-friendly amendments. Ultimately,  she says, the restaurant association must find friends wherever it can.
